The ranking methodology weighs five criteria to produce a final score. Teaching (30%) is rated by factors such as reputation surveys and student-to-faculty ratios, while research (30%) and citations (30%) make up the most of the rest of the scoring. The international makeup of the university accounts for 7.5%, while “industry outcomes” accounts for the final 2.5%.

Wayne State University in Detroit is next on the list down in the No. 501-600 range. Oakland University ranks in the No. 801-1000 range, while Grand Valley State University in west Michigan slotted in the No. 1201-1500 range.

Western Michigan University was also ranked in the No. 1201-1500 range.

Incoming UM President Santa Ono, who starts Friday, Oct. 14, tweeted out the news of his new university’s high international ranking.

“Today’s Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023 ranks the University of Michigan as the (No.) 23 university in the world and (No.) 14 in the USA among 1,799 ranked universities across 104 countries and regions,” he wrote.

University of British Columbia, Ono’s last stop as a university president, ranked No. 40 on the list.
